National Launching of the 30th International Day for the Midwife (IDM)

May 5th being International Midwifery Day, the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association commemorated the day by launching the 30th International day of the midwife in Keta in the Volta Region for which Dada Foundation was honored to be invited.

In attendance were the Chiefs and Queen mothers in the subregion, representatives from the Ministry of Health, the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akuffo Addo’s representative, Dada foundation, which was represented by Hayford Danso, the Executive Director and Mrs. Priscilla Fynn.  the Catholic Relief Society (CRS) Foundation and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Foundation were Chief Sponsors of the occasion.

The Keynote speaker was the Minister of Health who was also the guest of Honor Hon. Kwaku-Agyeman Manu spoke on the need to invest in the midwives by providing continuous training to the midwives, helping to provide them with the necessary infrastructure. A midwife from each region was recognized and awarded for their outstanding service to the profession and putting their patients first. Dada foundation donated a cash present of GHS1,000 to Ms. Delali Gavor for her tremendous efforts in her area.

The event brought light to the fact that Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) who find themselves in remote areas are not well equipped with new and modern techniques of child delivery and as matter of fact are not considered mainstream healthcare providers.

Dada Foundation-Ghana seeks to explore the possibilities of engaging the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Ghana Association of Midwives on bridging the gap between TBA’s and professional healthcare providers.

These TBAs still exist and are still administering childbearing support in their communities, hence there is a need to provide enough sensitization or professional support in admiring proper safety delivery practices.
