Revolutionizing Deaf Education in Ghana, A Specialized Abacus Training Academy for Teachers and Deaf Students

A feasibility tour was conducted on September 7, 2024, at the Demonstration School for the Deaf in Mampong-Akuapem, where representatives from Dada Foundation-Ghana, Skai Abacus Ghana, and Dr. Naa Adzoa Adzeley Boi-Dsane (the brainchild of this initiative) reviewed the facilities, met with school administrators, and assessed the potential for success for a specialized abacus training academy. The team interacted with students and a few parents whose eyes were beaming enthusiastically as they were briefly introduced to how to use the abacus and communicate through sign language. The outcome was overwhelmingly positive, setting the stage for the next critical step to achieving a partnership objective; Bridging the gap between the communication gap and promoting inclusivity and equality.

This program is set to become a ground-breaking initiative to transform the educational landscape for deaf students in Ghana. The pilot training sessions for teachers will commence, leading to a long-term program that will continually equip educators with the necessary tools to support deaf students in mastering the Abacus. The program is expected to create a ripple effect, inspiring other educational institutions to adopt similar models for inclusive learning. The training sessions aim to equip teachers with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively teach the Abacus to deaf students, enhancing their cognitive and mathematical abilities.
